Having played a few MMOs over the years, there are some things I've grown to expect and things I would like to see in a MMO.
(1) A passive XP Bonus The rest XP in SWTOR, now that I looked it up, is something that's been used for over a decade. As I understand, when you log in a rest area, Rest XP accumalates as that extra outline extending from your current XP. What that outline area means is, as long as you have it, you have a bonus to certain XP. Hence, you'll gain more XP and level faster.
In one MMO, it was the longer you stayed online, the better chance you had for bonuses and improvements to your toon.
(2) Spaces in the Toon Name As I said before in another thread, my 2nd MMO toon was "Spikey II", and that dates back to 1997. And it's 2012, and SWTOR will not allow spaces? or eVeN UppEr anD loWer character? Not the best programming. It's something so simple, but important to people that like using certain names for thier toons.
If you're not familiar with special characters like, ê, ą, ö, Ω, you get them from the Character Map - under Accessories, System Tools. I use Ctrl+V to paste them from the Character Map.
(3) Toon and Costume Design CoH I think was the first for me, were you could design an outfit and it never changed regardless of level or how you equiped yourself. Also the 2nd to allow sizable toons, Space and Beyond? I think was the 1st I saw. The joke with EQ when it came out was, watching other toons run by and many looked exactly like you. And if you played a game long enough, you knew the equipment people had, just by their appearance. As the equipment changed your appearance.
(4) Guildhall, Base, or Private area CoH was the 2nd I know to have bases, which I think everyone lacked at the time. In SWTOR - I look at the ship you get as your personal base/guildhall - you have storage, and can move from planet to planet like being teleported. If you have a guild/group there are base options it looks like.
(5) Social Chat Being able to communicate with your friends and new friends you find on the game, I think is key to making the game more enjoyable. A little disappointed that Private Channels in SWTOR do not allow both sides to communicate (maybe we're spies).
(6) Personal Instances I believe CoH introduced this - when you go on a mission, you have your own personal game instance that only you and your team can particapate in. Before, missions were a free for all, and "camping" was born. As certain missions, you had to wait for specific things to spawn at certain areas. So people would stake out those areas waiting for the spawn - hence camping. The verbal abuse you got when you intruded onto someone camping for a spawn was like stealing their last cookie. Imagine waiting one hour for a respawn, and someone rolls right up and takes the kill and reward. Usually, who ever delievered the killing blow got the reward. So, kill stealers would wait until you drew aggro and knocked the target down a bit and then they would jump in. And when someone reached the end of a mission killing the boss/target at the end, and running back aggroing everything that respawned to the entrance was a classic. Imagine entering a mission in CoH or SWTOR that another team just defeated the boss at the end, and pulled everything that respawned right to the door as you entered and they were leaving.
(7) Travel Until CoH, all I remember is running from place to place. It think WoW using mounts. EQ had a spell that was very popular, made you run faster, and spell casters charged you for it. Don't remember the name. For SWTOR, it's the speeders and shuttle crafts.

1. You don't even need to log out in the rest area, if you're just in one it builds, I'm sure it adds up faster when logged, but yesterday I was gaining rest xp while sending my crew on missions for stuff. 2. Yea this is stupid but since its star wars and the characters have always had odd names, I guess it makes sense : the game told me I had too many dashes in my name when I tried to make it, I had 2 total 3. Costumes were never a draw for CoH for me, but it was nice being able to see characters that were unique, when I was like live 14 on Dark-mi, I got on a lift with a character that had my exact outfit, it was funny cuz she said in general, "Well this is awkward" 4. not that big a deal for me 5. now this is a real negative, I hate making a new character because you had to manually add all the names on every toon, I guess CoH spoiled us by allowing side-switching and CO-OP zones (not sure if there are any in Star Wars) 6. This too sucks, I hate being in a fight next to a glowie, then someone else just runs up and clicks on it, then you have to wait for it to respawn. I will also lump in shared loot, nothing sucks more then needeing a "green drop" and having someone else get it, who cant even equip heavy armor at least Diablo III gave eveeryone their own loot. 7. I miss Super Jump so bad the speeders are ok and all, but they are still slow and the taxi system is too slow too, they should just show the ship taking off then landing, I dont need to see the whole route I am taking :-/

guy you are missing something here. SWORT is only a year old, its still a baby. I mean COH did not have global channels when it started, It didn't have travel power till level 14 when it started. There are many things in COH we had at the end we didn't have when it began. Give it time it will catch up I'm sure. And now with all the COH players coming over to it I'm sure the devs are getting a lot of feed back. I enjoy the game very much and plan to stay with it. I'm even pre-ordering the expansion pack today. Heck I may even build a Forum for it soon.

I am stickign with it too, from the limited interaction I have seen, the devs are nowhere as awesome as the CoH devs were, so nothing may change.

I dont know whose bright idea it was to only let you use /stuck once every 2 minutes but they should be killed.
Ok this is stupid I am stuck on a table/chair in a catina and even when I can use /stuck, I cant get outta this trap, everytime I jump I just hang in the air and I cant move out in any direction I am just trapped.
Jesus Christ this game is losing me with all this bullshit I have been going thru today.

I started the thread, not to smack at SWTOR, but to list what we look for in a MMO and what we've experienced. Any knocks that might be against SWTOR, apply to many other games. What the devs did with CoH was amazing, so many breakthroughs that others should be doing. I do realize the SWTOR is 1 year old, but I'm hoping that some development goes into it, much like CoH over the years. So a year or so from now, I hope a few things listed are reality. ( Loot Difoj brought this up, and it has become confusing. When I see the light, I can not tell if the loot is mine, the team's, or to be rolled over. Playing 2 toons at once, you can really get confused. Cause at one time, Spectrail picks up the loot, and I see all the lights go away on Stepain. But other times, Stepain still sees a light, and gets more loot. Not sure what that is all about. Would prefer, one person loot and it shares among everyone. I realize the color of the loot light means different things, Yellow appears to be quest items, Green and Blue are extra valuable items, and the white light is just plain items. The auto-loot option is a saver though, cause I don't have to worry about more clicking. Just have to be sure I have inventory room.

It seems as though the loot on a team is shared, and only when there are...commendations, I think they are called, does everyone have the same green light and then the yellow light for the quest items, otherwise it shows everyone what the item is and gives you the option to pass, need or greed and then it uses the RNG and gives the loot to libby :

(9) Zoning Asheron's Call (aka AC) by Microsoft was the first MMO I played that was mostly Zone Free. All others had zones, which were breeding grounds for PKers to ambush people on PvP servers. In AC, you walk/ran everywhere from what I remember. Maybe 10+ minutes plus to get to a new town. Things in the distance looked like white dots, and eventually appeared as red (hostile) or white (neutral) dots on your radar, much like SWTOR. This was one thing about CoH I didn't like, and it was funny how they used the Rikti War Walls for explaining zones. And this is one of the things I like about SWTOR. And they took it a step further by using that zonelessness aspect to get into personal instances. No more waiting for your mission to load. Just a brief flicker and you're in. Considering all the things in SWTOR that are time sinks, this is a time saver. Near the end, it appears CoH was experimenting with this in Atlas Park.
(10) Switching Sides I don't know if there is an option yet or not, but I would imagine in the future - SWTOR introduces a way to switch sides. Jedi Knight - Sith Warrior Jedi Counsuler - Sith Inquisitor Smuggler - Imperial Agent Trooper - Bounty Hunter
After all Anakin turned into Darth Vader.
Pop quiz who else turned sides ?

I think its more like: Jedi Knight - Sith Warrior Jedi Counsuler - Sith Inquisitor Smuggler - Bounty Hunter Trooper - Imperial Agent As far as switching sides: 1 Don't think Lando Calrissian really changed sides he was always on his own side. 2 Count Dooku became Darth Tyranus 3 Then there is Chancellor Palpatine was he always the Sith Lord/Emperor.

Count Dooku did become Darth Tyranus is a correct one, which was apparent in the movies.
I was thinking old school Star Wars and something not so apparent . . .
Han Solo was in the Imperial Navy and then became a Smuggler. He was kicked out after an incident involving a bunch of wookiees. Among them was Chewbacca, who swore a life-debt to Han for sparing them. Sounds like a cut-scene decision for the light side.
I don't know the exact details of the incident.
Apparently, the pants Han wears are Imperial Blood Stripe for some honor or other. / / Didn't remember properly, Corellian Bloodstripe - just googled it.
Hence, Imperial Agent <--> Smuggler ;-)
And almost forgot, Jango Fett (Bounty Hunter) was cloned to swell the Stormtrooper (Trooper) ranks.
Hence, Bounty Hunter <---> Trooper

(11) Video capture, edit, & playback Someone correct me on this one, but here is my Top 3,5,10,20,50, or 100 list of MMOs regarding the subject: (1) City of Heroes/Villians
From what I know, CoX is in a category all its own.
While I never did much of the videoing I would of loved to have done, I thought /demorecord was awesome. Many times listening to songs on the radio, I thought about how it could be put into a music video with CoH, much like many MMOs. Plus, being a YouTuber, I like watching and listending to Music Videos.
Some SWTOR videos, I could find. Be interesting to see if more hit YouTube as time goes by.
This is really old, in a time long long ago, but still thinks it's entertaining.
I did post a couple of videos to YouTube, but my graphics were horrible in comparison to others.

With the development of new technologies, I think any above average MMO needs to offer the following;
A plastic figure of your toon, that you can paint.
Bonus, if the MMO provides the figure to you painted.
This should be beyond easy in today's world. All the company has to do is purchase a 3D printer, and get a request from a customer, and BANG! you pop out figure of the toon, provided by the customer, using the 3D printer.
Note, I've never used a 3D printer, but I have to imagine it used a 3D program that could import a toon's dimensions. However, I would imagine anyone with enough money could do this themselves.
This would probably have to be part of providing a MMO store to purchase the items. For many MMOs, it seems that you buy clothing and other real world stuff via 3rd party sites, which I guess pay the MMO a kickback for selling their IP.
(12) MMO Store/Shop:Provide a figure of customer's toon

I'm starting to see a trend in some recent games, which is interesting. (13) Create actual unique stuff in the game; (a) Structures - sort of like MineCraft, a few games allow some flexability in creating buildings, your guildhall, house, town, etc. The only issue is PvP types, when someone can come in and destroy your long hours of building in moments. This is different from buying a Base and filling it with pre-designed items. Imagine being able to design the teleporters, conference rooms, etc. (b) Items - sort of like mods/skins for many games, except in changing the appearance you change the physical look of the item. You download an existing item file, and with a 3rd party graphic program change the dimensions. Appears there are steps and confirmation from the company before it becomes legit and usable to avoid copyrights and offensive things. I posted something like this 10+ yrs ago for a potential game - Dawn by Glitchless (which might of been hoax) that was talking about adding this stuff. My post made a reference to swords taking on a rather *cough* "manly" *cough* appearance and the horror some players might have being attacked by such weapons. Biggest issue I see with this is the really good 3rd party programs are rather expensive. This idea seems to take a more sandbox tilt, and I guess is suppose to develop player attachment to the game if you are allowed to create such things. Hence the MineCraft craze. In reference to Dawn, it suggested using a Perm Death system and a legacy system (unlike SWTOR) involving offspring. Also imagine allowing prisons, like a long term version of the prisons in some CoH missions.

And while in posting mode,
(14) VR options - far from the Matrix and SAO anime, but we're actually (frightenly) getting closer.
With Oculus, LeapMotion, Kinect type hardware being developed and not being offered for amazingly high prices, how far are we from a working VR MMO? If you think the gear is bulky, you should of seen Disney's Aladdin’s Magic Carpet Ride headset. Issue with this are people with physical limitations. For instance, imagine playing games using the Dance Dance Revolution Dance Pad Controller. Or imagine being strapped into a huge gyroscope device like The Lawnmower Man.
Going a step further, reading peoples minds with displayed computer images has advanced a tad further than I thought. Hence the (frightenly) above. Now if the process can be reversed, sending images to the brain you got the Matrix - less killer machines at the controls. But research is advancing in mapping the brain to allow such things, just as in the Matrix and SAO. Of course, you got the Lawnmower Man, Dreamscape, Inception and so forth. But FireFox (Clint Eastwood movie - 1982) tech is here. So maybe another 20+ yrs VR gets more realistic.

In regards to (14) VR options - one of my CoH facebook friends posted a rough look of him doing a Tank's handclasp attack. Graphics were extremely basic, but interesting people are working on it. However, not sure how many people would stand for a few hours hooping about to play CoH. I'ld be tired before 30 minutes.
Sadly, I could not find the post today :-( to link to the site.
