So my friend asked me to try Final Fantasy XIV, www.finalfantasyxiv.com and since I got a gift card to Best Buy for my birthday I did pick it up, it is your standard fantasy MMO, at least for now, but being on old school Final Fantasy fan from way back, its nice to see the various reoccurring characters that I literally grew up with. I am only at level 8 as a Pugilist which is basically a scrapper. I am currently on the 30 day trial for buying the game since I couldn't find a free free trial, not sure if I will then subscribe to it.
It's definitely not City of Heroes, that is for sure

Trying to follow up on City of Heroes is tough. There are MMO's, around a dozen, I've played since '97 still running online, none are as good as CoH, at least IMO. Although, several had cool things, such as Final Fantasy having characters you're familiar with. Haven't played a FF game in very long time.

I've found Guild Wars 2 is the best fantasy MMO I've played. My first MMO was Asheron's Call in 1999, which is still running! CoH is still the best overall (just needs a major graphics upgrade).

Asheron's Call . . . I played that for a bit. Rather unique spell system with reagents and words, and monsters could level up from defeating players, which led to the Level 5+ Killer Rabbits in newbie zones. Was probably the first zone free MMO, and not sure of the level cap but it went up rather high. Changing of the environment with the seasons was cool. The only thing that sucked was when someone broke an allegiance within a guild. And reviewing AC, they re-released AC2?

It goes well so far, I am really amazed at how CoH did so many things so much better then any other MMO I have played, the sidekick system is the main aspect, how others companies don't see that friends want to be able to play with their friends regardless of when they started the game is mind boggling. Travel sucks too Other then that at times it was difficult for me to find missions to do to get some levels so I could advance the main story, which could use some tweaking, since the main storyline seems to always have a dungeon at the end of that and it forces you to team (4 players) and unless you roll in with a pre-made team, if you use the "team finder" it always forces you to have 1 tank, 1 healer and 2 DPS. I finally got a chocoboo at 29, which is a higher level then I took Super Jump on CoH when I first started that game and trying to find better gear that you buy seems unpossible as all the merchants seem to sell either way lower then my current level or way higher, I suppose I could buy something and hold onto it, but what if I find it or something better, then I have wasted gil, which isn't the easiest thing to come buy. CoH spammers have nothing on these spammers I get a minimum of 10 spam tells per play session The more I play the better I get, but still have a long way to go to learn a lot of the little sub game stuff like material crafting. Here is my guy currently, the "costume creator" is very lacking compared to CoH also

My understanding is that every "costume creator" is lacking compared to CoH.

Huge amount of quests, crafting, guilds, one continuous zone, etc, all developed by a very small team on a very tight budget. AC2 was released around 2002 but was poorly designed and flopped badly. I still remember logging in for the first time and running around with other players. That was amazing since only single player games were available at the time.

My understanding is that every "costume creator" is lacking compared to CoH. Yea out of the limited amount of MMOs I have played, total of five now, only CoH could let you actually have a unique costume, you know me, I don't really care about outfits, but I like to have my own style, in all these other games, more then likely you are going to run into someone with your gear on

Yeah, it's nice to look different and be recognized by your ton's appearance. I know when this guy ventured out from the first MMO I played to play Everquest and Ultima Online - he had some funny stories, about spending an hour making up his character and selecting just the right appearance. Only to stand proudly in the newbie zones, watching people looking just like him run by.

Sort of reminded of EQ, but with much better graphics. Went with little Lalafell folk, cause reminds me of Halflings/Hobbits - took Conjuring thinking I could get Summoner later to have use pets like a group and buff them - like I did with Spec in CoH with Phantoms, but doesn't look like it works that way. I did take the Malboro world, and seem to get lots of random guild invites. Only level 13 conjurer, and still trying to figure all the quest, duty, and other things. But have yet to see anyone fly? btw - name is Spectral Eye, and been teaming with another Lalafell - so that is not a 2nd account. Not sure I would get one, cause there's no FOLLOW command that I see.

Well if you get an invite from Souls of Serenity that is the guild I am in, I don't have any kind of rank in it so I cant invite you or anything, but there is an application you can fill out at the "guild maker" or if you click on someone with SoS next to their name you should be able to link over to that.
No flying except in an airship, but you don't control that, thank god. Well you can get a flying mount but your only like 3 feet off the ground so that not really flying.

LOL didn't take you long to get to level 50. and is your toon name an accident, cause you used your real name?

It's not my real name, its my real first name and what they call me, which is a shorter version with some alterations of my last name You can hold up to 16 missions so I was just grabbing every "!" mission I could find and would just run those, plus if you do Fates that pop up, you can get good exp from those and those are always showing up.

Here are some useful tips that I just found out not to long ago: Once you start crafting, be sure to try to get at least some % on the HQ side, the higher it goes the more exp you get for crafting and you might even get lucky and get an HQ item with slightly better stats. Once you get a Chocobo, be sure to get some Gyshall greens so that it can fight along side with you, you can buy them in Ul'dah at the Ruby Road exchange under...tools I believe. I couldn't find them at first when I got my Chocobo, so I lost out on over 30 levels of exp the chocobo could have been earning and I am struggling getting him up in levels. ( not sure where they max out at, but I don't think its too high) If you need some gear or weapons, let me know, I can try crafting stuff, I have a Blacksmith in the 20s, and goldsmith in the 30s and a leatherworker in the 20s also.

Up to level 20 CNJ, and when L18 made my way to Ul'dah by foot. Once there, I got all the classes you could get, and then went for Limsa Lominsa. However, all modes of transportation were denied to me. Then I got a mission to travel to all 2 city-states, so once in LL - I got all the classes, except Arcanist (ferry denied to me). Did a Group Finder mission, and ran the same dungeon twice with 2 different groups, and learned what you meant when they say team is Tank, DPS, and Healer. After several mobs, I was told that I should only Heal, despite the fact no one died or ever had their Health below 50%. Apparrently, people get miffed if the Healer starts DPSing. I was told me Heals were "Awesome", but I should no attack. Weird . . . For crafting, I'm guessing if Durability gets to 0% the item is ruined? Cause to improve quality you sacrifice durability. But at higher levels, you can restore that, to improve quality. Interesting ideas. I did notice on the items I crafted with higher quality, that I got more XP. Not sure what the "Chain" buff is? You can defintly keep yourself busy with this game.

Yea for crafting if you don't fill up the first bar by the time it reaches 0, your synthesis fails, also even if you fill up the HQ bar all the way, if you don't fill up that first bar, you still fail, I found that out the hard way The Chain bonus I only got at the lower levels, I think its for killing the same type of mob quickly and as you kill more of them the bonus goes up. You also get bonus exp depending on the level difference between your main job and any other class jobs you take, what I did was get my Pugalist to 30, then swapped to lancer, to get him to 15, so I could unlock Monk and I have been a monk every since. The bonus does not apply to the crafting/hunting jobs, just the Disciplines of war/magic ones. So be sure to map out what "advanced class" you can become, since you're a conjurer, once you get an arcanist to 15 you can unlock White Mage You can also get cross set powers, you cant get everything but you can make a pretty powerful guy if you know what you're doing, I however, do not fully grasp this concept yet

It does seem like you can eventually max all the classes like in SW. but SW only allowed u to use X amount of powers, if I remember. FFXIV seems like some classes war and magic are "linked". for example, class A and B are linked, and while playing class A, you can use some or all of class B's powers. that's how I see it, probably more complex.

I'll have to get a game time card. Still on the 30 day free trial. Since you can only get the reward once, if you get another person to refer, maybe someone in the guild can use me for the refer a friend reward?

To receive reward items immediately, you must purchase subscription days using a game time card. Items will be delivered via the moogle delivery service. * Reward items can only be redeemed once per character. Inviting multiple friends will not grant additional items. * Friends invited via the Recruit a Friend system will not be added to your in-game Friend List automatically.

I looked into the refer a friend and Notes - In order to receive bonus items, your friend must register for FINAL FANTASY XIV using the recruitment code generated by your service account. Bonus items will be granted based on the number of subscription days accumulated by your friend, and delivered via the moogle delivery service. - You can only invite one friend per day. - Recruitment codes are valid for 120 days after they are generated. - Depending on your friend's email filter settings, it may be necessary for them to permit email messages from @account.square-enix.com. So I don't think it will work on you
