This is the story of how I started playing City of Heroes and other fun information. I will be all over the place on this so be warned
It was May 23rd 2004 and my friend Eddie was telling me that another couple of friends, Pete and Gurmo, were playing a game called City of Heroes and that he was going to join them and I should too. Now back in those days I had heard about people going crazy with, I think it was Ever quest or EQ2, and I had no interest in playing an on line game and becoming one of "those people" and knowing the short attention spans of all the involved parties, I didn't think they would stick it out with this game for more then 6 months.
We had gone to Best Buy, to buy the game and installed it and goofed around with it at his house and I found the costume creator to be amazing, I know how things change, and later that day I went to buy the game for myself.
After getting everything all set up it was time to make a character, now being my first real on line game, I played Neverwinter Nights for about 10 minutes before I removed it, I didn't quite understand the various play styles of the game, but using my advanced knowledge of a previous game we played, Heroclixs, I ended up making a rad/psi defender named Stacie, due to the heal aura and knowing how great Psi damage was in heroclixs. Amazing how years later this combo would be considered one of the earlier power combos and I was ahead of the curve Stacie didn't last very long because, well defenders and me never did mix and was deleted to make my next toon.
My second character made I decided to go for something that sounded more powerful, Scrapper, now came the hard part again, choosing power sets, being a huge fan of the monk class of the Final Fantasy games, I decided to go with Claws, thinking they would be more like a ninja style of claws, much like it was in the FF games and then thinking , since I was new and didn't really know what I was doing, I wouldn't be teaming up with strangers much if at all, so again using my knowledge of other video games (FF again) I realized that End and health would be important and went with Regen because of the heals and Quick Recovery and after selecting the worst costume I have ever made, I know I know, I decided to name him after my nickname from my friend that I would be playing with DiFoj, but again since I was a rookie, I didn't think having to spell it out with the capital D and F was good, not knowing you don't have to spell it like that to invite, do just the quicker to type difoj.
Once I started playing difoj I was very upset that claws were actually wolverine style claws and on more then one occasion I thought this animation sucks and thought about deleting him and trying out another power set. I am not sure why I never did, but was glad that I didn't. I didn't really play him too much because of the stupid "snikt" start to drawing out the claws, so it was time to make another toon.
My third toon turned out to be a blaster, being a big fan of electricity I went with Elec blast and Perhaps Elec Manip, but I am not 100% sure on the 2ndar and named him the very awesome God Slayer, which after deleting this character would not allow me to make the name again with the space only as GodSlayer and then I lost the name when I deleted whatever I redid him as. I had great fun with this toon, it was easy to kill stuff from range and not have to worry about dying, again this is in the early levels of the game, but once I hit level 6, I made a huge error and chose hover, I was awestruck at how slow I was "flying" and thus began my now legendary hate of flying.
Around this time I decided to post about the game on my main website, www.shoryuken.com to see if anyone else played, as it turned out quite a few people did play and that's how I met Unreal aka Dess and FrankDaDank, an Ice/something blaster and joined Dess' super group, MDK.
After running with the original group that got me into the game, we realized that our power sets just didn't mesh very well, we would run TF and they would take many hours, original Posi took us 6 hours to run, so we decided to make a theme group and refocus on building better team synergy, thus Darker Disney was born, I chose Happy. due to my happy go lucky attitude... Dark Maul/Inv scrapper, back when Unyielding did not allow you to move, Gurmo was a fire/rad troller, Eddie was Doc emp/rad defender, Pete was a AR/dev blaster, then 2 other guys Gurmo knew were fire/fire blasters, we would steamroll thru stuff, but the group died out around 32 and only Gurmo and I stayed with CoH.
After Darker Disney stalled out and the theme died, I went back to working on difoj, my first build was so awful, being a rookie I didn't realize how annoying Mez would be, misread some powers and didn't get Super Jump until 26, and thought pure offense was the answer to everything, but soloing in Talos off the Skyway entrance fighting Tsoo, made me realize that was not the correct answer and lucky for me Gurmos main was a DM/Regen scrapper and he was able to help me understand the powers better.I remember joining a random group in the original Faultline, it was impossible to get around there only using hurdle and sprint and although they TPed a few times, they did kick me after a few missions
Things happened, new players joined MDK and we would run 8 man teams that would have waiting lists for players, waiting for players to drop off the team, using Cylvers smoke grenade exploit to make killing stuff super safe. Getting so many new players led the MDK forums to become to spammie for my tastes and I didn't post too much there after a while.
Around this time I think there was a post from Ms Liberty Too about joining her supergroup for female toons and joined, but did not follow the rules and used my mains name instead of my first belle, Milena. Trying to find Ms Liberty Too, ingame was a challenge but finally I saw a Belle sitting on Atlas' foot and asked if MLT was on and turned out that I was talking to her on an Alt toon and she finally got the legend in her Super group.
PvP eventually made its way into our game and I was excited at first for it, seeing how great difoj was at the pVE game, I thought I was unstoppable and in our first few giant matches I was but once teams got smaller and maps became more confined I could see that in order to give the "lesser" classes a chance vs. tanks/scrappers they game powers extra help, the main issue I had was Transference and Transfusion immobilizing me even thru integration, that really irked me and then the super speeding NRG blasters started coming around kiting and talking mad shit and that killed any fun PvP may have had for me.
(I am tired of typing stuff out, I may come back to this later)
