You can only play that game if you agree to take your first hero, Spider-man, to its full level.

If all you are doing is playing a pre-made toon, it does not have much pull on me. From the trusty Wiki: Marvel Heroes (originally known as Marvel Universe Online and Marvel Universe) is a browser-based Massively multiplayer online game currently under developement by Gazillion Entertainment, under "Secret Identity Studios" in San Mateo California. The MMORG will be similar to its sister game Marvel Super Hero Squad Online. Characters such as Iron Man, Captain America, Deadpool and Squirrel Girl will serve as characters that players can unlock in the game. The lead writer of the game is Brian Michael Bendis, who has written a number of major Marvel comics. The plot will revolve around the super villain Doctor Doom and various Marvel superheroes. An official release date of the game is currently unknown. Gameplay Marvel Heroes will be a free-to-play game and will not require a monthly subscription. While micro-transactions will be used to fund and support the game, players will not need to spend money to access the full game. Players will be able to play as various Marvel superheroes, such as Iron Man, Ms. Marvel, Human Torch, Storm, Cyclops, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, Wolverine, Captain America, Thing, Squirrel Girl, Nova, Cable, Deadpool, Colossus, Emma Frost, and Black Widow. Seen in the trailer, but not yet officially revealed are Magneto, and the Scarlet Witch. History and development Marvel Universe Online was originally going to be developed by Cryptic Studios, but was later cancelled, and was not picked up until years later by Gazillion Entertainment. Cryptic Studios Marvel Universe Online was the original working title of Champions Online. The MMO game was developed by Cryptic Studios and was to be published by Microsoft Game Studios exclusively for Microsoft Windows using a license from Marvel. However, the project was changed on February 11, 2008 due to what a Microsoft spokesperson referred to as "an inability to compete" with the current MMO marketplace. Less than a week later, Cryptic Studios announced that development would continue using a new IP license of The Champions (Hero Universe), a -based role playing game. Confirmation of the project's cancellation arrived on February 11, 2008, although rumors of the possible cancellation had existed since at least November of the previous year. Shane Kim, the head of Microsoft Games Studios, stated in an interview that the cancellation was primarily due to the competitive market for subscription-based MMOs, and that while one current MMO was successful, "everything else wouldn't meet our level or definition of commercial success". Gazillion Entertainment On Tuesday, March 17, 2009, it was revealed that Gazillion Entertainment has signed an exclusive 10-year deal with Marvel games, of which Marvel Universe is one. The first title released is called Marvel Super Hero Squad Online, which targets younger audiences. After the MMORPG was renamed Marvel Universe it was renamed again as Marvel Heroes. Gazillion Entertainment has chosen to use Epic Games's Unreal Engine 3, instead of the Unity 3D engine used for Marvel Super Hero Squad Online, with studio director Jeff Lind stating "We love Unreal Engine 3’s streaming system. It’s made our entire technical approach possible and is easy to work with. We also love the flexibility we get from the actor components, which have empowered us to make all kinds of customizations without sacrificing the built-in features of the engine.”

www.gamezone.com/products/marvel-heroes/previews/pax-prime-2012-marvel-heroes-hands-on-previewIf there is one thing for certain, the Action RPG craze is booming now more than ever. Diablo III, Torchlight II and the just announced Sacred 3, it's obvious that people can't get enough of that isometric, fast paced combat. While DC Comics already have their universe represented in an MMO in DCU, fans of Marvel still didn't have anything to look forward to in the online universe... until now. Marvel Heroes is essentially a Diablo style game, except with famous Marvel heroes and villains. Instead of creating your own unique character, you'll actually be able to play as many of the heroes you know and love, such as Iron Man, Hulk, Spider-Man, Wolverine and more. It's an interesting concept, one that I didn't quite understand until I finally got my hands on it. If you're familiar with any isometric Action RPG thus far, you'll feel right at home with Marvel Heroes. Left clicking will move your character and right click will have a certain power assigned. Of course you'll have more moves at your disposition thanks to hotkeys. I played as a few characters, and found that they all play drastically different from each other, something incredibly welcome to see in an ARPG. Iron Man relied on heavy strikes with the occasional rocket and repulsor blast to clear his enemies, Hulk was pure brute force with a charge attack and power-up aura which gave him an increased boost in strength, while Wolvering was extremely agile, dashing to his enemies, closing gaps and using his claws to do some heavy damage. What's great is that you're never tied down to just a single hero. By simply pressing the T button, your Team menu will display all currently unlocked heroes that you can switch to on the fly, given that you're not being attacked at the time. What's even better is that at the time, there are 22 Marvel characters announced so far, which many more to come. Of course what's an ARPG without loot. During my short playtime, I was absolutely showered with various equipment that I could immediately outfit my characters with. While the standard loot won't change the appearance of your hero, it will raise various paramaters and stats. I also asked whether it's possible to team up with five other friends and all play as the same character. The answer was a resounding yes, which means if you want to make an army of Iron Men, you have that option. To keep things not only interesting, but also to easily distinguish yourself from another player with the same hero, there will be a myriad of costumes that will all completely alter the look of your hero, and many will be pulled directly from the Marvel lore. So you're asking, how much will I have to pay to play this game? Absolutely nothing. The game will be entirely Free to Play, which is amazing given the amount of content available. Of course an in game shop will be available, but the items sold won't be pay to win, but instead offer various cosmetic changes, or boosts to XP gain, etc. The closed beta is scheduled to happen later this year, so if you're itching to take your favorite Marvel hero online and kick some butt, you won't have to wait that long.

Kinda bummed that its not an MMO, but an action RPG. I am tired of the left click to move and attack scheme, made Diablo III way harder then it needed to be at higher levels, when youre trying to run away and you attack a mob because you clicked on it while trying to find a spot on the screen without an enemy. I'm still gonna give it a chance though

To me, one of the draws of CoH, CO, and DCUO is creating a personally unique hero or villain that you can all your own. And I wonder if they'll up the team size, or create leagues? But with F2P, I guess you cann't ask for the world. I've quasi-boycotted Marvel since the time they sued CoH. Stop buying the comic books, but do watch the movies. But if CoH goes the way of the dinosaurs, I would consider trying. btw, it's old news, but I recently read something about NC Soft trademarking City of Heroes 2 back in 2010 ? ? ? ? ?

marvelheroes.com/community-blog/closed-beta-registration-beginsWhat Closed Beta means for you, and for Marvel Heroes Hello everyone! In this, our first ever Developer Blog, I want to give you an insight into the Closed Beta process for Marvel Heroes, which begins today. I say ‘Developer Blog’ but really this is a Community Blog, seeing as I’m your Community Director. My name’s Stephen Reid, also known online as ‘Rockjaw’. As running Closed Beta is part of my job, I wanted to introduce it to all of you. We’ve had a great response to our early call for Closed Beta applicants, and now we’re ready to move on to the next stage - inviting some of you to take part in testing Marvel Heroes. This is a huge moment for the development team here at Gazillion, who have been working overtime to bring the game up to a level where we’re ready to get some Marvel Heroes fans – that’s you - to do some testing. Notice I did say ‘testing’ and not ‘play a demo’ or ‘play the game early’. When we say ‘Closed Beta’ it means that you’re testing unfinished software. Marvel Heroes is still in active development, and everyone who applies for Closed Beta should realize, quite simply, that it’s not done. We hope you’ll enjoy playing, but we also hope you’ll help us make the game even better with great constructive feedback and dedicated testing. Taking part in a Closed Beta can sometimes be more like work than play – but it’s a unique chance to see a game taking shape, and to get an insight into development. We still know many of you are excited to get into Closed Beta and help us test. We just need a little more information from you to make that happen. Let’s break down the next few steps. Step 1: You register an account on MarvelHeroes.com Today we opened up account registration on MarvelHeroes.com. If you haven’t done so already, you can register an account here. Your account details are important; your username is going to be what you use in-game, and your password will let you play – so be careful when you’re registering. Over the next couple of days we’re going to email everyone who left their email address via our home page and let them know they can register an account. If you get an email and you already registered an account, you can ignore it. Registering an account does not get you immediate access to Closed Beta. Step 2: We will send out Closed Beta surveys We’d like to know a little more about our potential Closed Beta testers, so before we admit you to Closed Beta, we’re asking everyone to fill out a survey. To be eligible to fill out a survey, you’ll need to have registered an account (see Step 1!). The survey will ask you a few questions about the type of games you like to play and your experiences in other Betas. There are no right or wrong answers on the survey - we’re looking for a whole range of experiences. However, if you don’t fill out the survey, at this stage, you won’t be eligible to be selected for Closed Beta. The survey link will be sent out to those people who register an account later this week. Filling out a Closed Beta survey does not get you immediate access to Closed Beta. Step 3: We will select some applicants to join Closed Beta When we have our surveys in-hand and have compiled all the data from them, we’ll start to select our first round of invitees to Closed Beta. That first round of invitees will be a very exclusive, small number of people. Over time we’ll be adding many more people to Closed Beta, so there’s a really good chance that if you want to get in, you’ll be able to at some point. Please be patient as you wait your chance to be picked. I know you probably have a few questions already about the Closed Beta process, so let me try and answer them for you – before you ask them! I call these Frequently Not Asked Yet Questions… or FNAYQ! It rolls off the tongue. Q: Why can’t you let everyone who applies into Closed Beta? There are a number of reasons but the biggest one is this: Marvel Heroes isn’t finished yet. Like any piece of unfinished software, it has bugs and issues that we’re working on. While we think it is good enough for some people to play, we don’t want to give a large number of people the wrong impression of the game. At the same time, and almost as important, limiting the number of people who play makes it easier for us to gather feedback for the development team. Q: I’ve registered an account and filled out a survey. How will I know when I get invited to Closed Beta? Simple: you’ll get an email to the email address you registered when you signed up for an account. The Closed Beta invite email will come from an email address at the domain 'marvelheroes.com’ so please add that domain to your ‘safe senders’ list – that way there’s no chance of you missing it. In that email will be a link which will let you apply a Beta Key to your account, and you’ll then be accepted to take part in Closed Beta. Q: Is there any other way to get into Closed Beta apart from being randomly selected? There will be other opportunities to get selected for Closed Beta in the next few months. For example, we’ll be giving out Closed Beta Keys in very limited numbers at New York Comic-Con, as a special thank-you to some fans who attend the show. We know not everyone can make it to conventions though, so we’ll also be partnering with websites worldwide for special Beta Key promotions. We’d also advise you to make sure you follow us on Twitter and Facebook… you never know what might turn up there. You probably have more questions and we’d like to hear from you. Please join us on Facebook and Twitter where we interact with fans like on a regular basis and ask your questions there – we’ll do our best to answer. As Closed Beta moves forward we’ll also be checking in with you on a regular basis via blogs like this one, so I look forward to talking to you again soon! Stephen Reid

I was able to play for a bit yesterday, being the beta and all, its was a little laggy, but playable. I choose Captain America you start off with 2 attacks, a basic punch attack and then, in Caps case, a shield throw that can hit 2 times if you do it from the right distance. I was able to level up to 3, but that level system was kinda clunky, wasn't really sure what to do with that. Various costumes and items fell quite often, but only on the boss dropped stuff that my character could use, but I did get items for other characters, if I knew how to switch to another character, and thankfully I wasn't the only one who didn't know how to do that as I saw a few people asking on chat, but I never did see an answer said on the chat. There were 5 other Captain Americas on the "2nd level" and we all looked the same The store kept locking up so I was unable to by any costumes with the free "G's" they gave us. It's a Diablo III game with Marvel heroes in it, fun, but nothing that I think would last for more then maybe a month if you have a group to play with it regularly Overall, had CoH not been closed, this would not have been able to take me away from it, but if they allow you to play as Villains, that is gonna be great ;D
